When you left your old job, you may have left your retirement savings behind. 401(k) options tend to be somewhat limited, may have high fees, and might be less efficient to access the funds than an IRA account. Simply cashing out of your old plan will eliminate tax advantages that you previously enjoyed. You can avoid this by choosing to roll your 401(k) into a personally owned IRA.

Is A Rollover The Right Decision for Me?

Q: "Joel, how do I know if I should rollover to an IRA?"

A: "Rolling over a qualified retirement plan such as a 401(k), 457, 403(b), 401(a), SEP IRA, SIMPLE IRA Plans, and others is actually a relatively simple process, and the benefits are almost universal. In my experience, many people are unaware just how limited their options are in their employer's old retirement plan and that they're missing out on investment opportunities that provide superior benefits to those offered in their old 401(k).

A rollover is easy to do, and it's something that I've found brings clarity and peace of mind to many people who didn't even realize they had the option!"

Commonly asked questions about 401(k) rollovers

Q: What is a Rollover?

A: A rollover is when you move assets in an employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 401(k) or 403(b), into an IRA.

Q: How long does a rollover take?

A: Rollovers typically take 2 to 3 weeks to complete depending upon the current plan custodian.

Q: Will the money directly transfer into my new account or will I get a check?

A: This depends upon the current plan.  Some plans require you to receive a check made payable to your new custodian.  Some plans will allow for direct transfers.

Q: Do I have to select specific investments right away?

A: No, we encourage you to take your time and have absolute confidence in your retirement goals and objectives before selecting your investments.  At City Center Advisors, LLC we help people make decisions on investments for new IRA accounts every day and we're confident that we can do the same for you.

Q: How much does it cost to roll over my savings into an IRA?

A: Rollovers typically do not cost you anything unless the current custodian has some form of account closing fees.  Most retirement plans do not have these fees.

Q: What do I need to do a rollover?

A: Your most recent statement for your retirement account will have all the required information to execute a 401(k) rollover.

Q: Is it always the best idea to do a rollover?

A: There are times when a rollover is not the best option and there may be reason to leave your 401(k), or other retirement plan where it is. At City Center Advisors, LLC we will evaluate the impact that a rollover will have for you to help you make the right decision.
